As an RMT (Registered Massage Therapist), Dave Hanemaayer specializes in laser acupuncture (a.k.a. low level laser therapy, LLLT, photobiomodulation, cold laser) as a technique in his massage therapy sessions to treat tissue pain, injury, stress and promote a generalized "super healing" response.

No needles pierce the skin as in traditional acupuncture. This is acupuncture without "the puncture". Only gentle low-intensity laser light is applied to the tissues to reduce inflammation, promote tissue regeneration, and reduce pain.

Stress can be divided into two categories, healthy and unhealthy. Healthy stress can be identified as stress that increases the body’s ability to perform well under short or medium term pressure. Examples of healthy stress include reacting quickly in dangerous situations, working towards a deadline, heightened awareness when driving, playing sports, taking a test or exam and speaking public.
Unhealthy stress is prolonged in nature. Some symptoms of unhealthy stress:
Stress raises your levels of adrenaline and cortisol. These stress hormones promote what is called the “flight or fight” response in your body. This state causes an increased heart rate, respiration, and high blood pressure. These increases make bodily organs work harder. Over prolonged periods, unhealthy stress exhausts your adrenal glands and suppresses your immune system function. Reducing unhealthy stress is critical to combating such illnesses as heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and even arthritis. There are thousands of research articles on the connection between chronic stress and disease. It is estimated that 70-80% of all visits to physicians are for stress related illnesses.
Most people know that the best way to reduce stress is to live an active and healthy lifestyle. Eating a well balanced diet, getting enough sleep and regular exercise are some of the main ways to do this. However, these activities require a regular investment of time, money and energy that can be challenging with busy schedules. In response to elevated stress levels, most people have developed chronically tight muscles in the back and neck. This is where Dave can help.
Dave believes the answer to reducing unhealthy stress when you need a quick and healthy solution involves two-stages. First, relieve the symptoms of unhealthy stress through massage therapy in order to foster a temporary oasis of calm and relaxation. Second, take advantage of this window of opportunity to make positive and long lasting lifestyle changes.
By combining his knowledge in massage therapy, medical acupuncture and laser therapy - Dave offers a specialized and effective solution to treating stress in the Kitchener-Waterloo area.
There are six main benefits of using laser acupuncture in a massage treatment to reduce stress with Dave Hanemaayer, in Kitchener-Waterloo:
When you come for your treatment with Dave Hanemaayer, RMT, in Kitchener, you will relax by lying down on a comfortable massage table while listening to relaxing music. Dave will explain the procedure to you and ask you to wear protective eyewear. In addition to using hands-on massage techniques, Dave will apply low-intensity laser to various acupuncture points on the wrist, arm, feet and lower leg. Ear points are stimulated individually. You may feel a slight warm or tingling sensation through your body. As the points are stimulated with the laser light, your body may begin to release endorphins and other powerful neuro-chemicals which promote a pleasant sense of relaxation.
After the treatment you may experience a strong sense of relaxation. Dave will discuss home care strategies for your managing your stress like stretches and breathing techniques.
Based on medical acupuncture, Dave targets key acupuncture points on the ear (also known as auricular therapy), arms, hands and lower legs. Using painless, low intensity laser - he stimulates these acupoints in order to release neurotransmitters in the brain such as dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins. This technique stimulates the pleasure centres of the brain, promoting what is known as the “rest and digest” state (opposite to “fight or flight”).
During treatment, many experience a wave of relaxation wash over them. Upon completion, most report feeling extremely calm and an increased sense of well-being. In many cases, people sleep extremely well the night of treatment. This is a welcome reprieve from unhealthy stressors related to work, relationships or everyday life.
Treatment results can not be guaranteed as every individual responds a little differently. There are various studies published from Japan, Germany, Sweden and China showing a decrease in the stress response of recipients following acupuncture for stress. Also, there are over 5,000+ scientific studies proving laser therapy efficacy for multitudes of soft tissue pain and injury.
Results cannot be guaranteed as every individual person responds a little differently. However, most people begin to respond positively during treatment while others need 6 – 24 hours to experience the peak short-term effect.
An individualized treatment plan will be proposed to help treat your stress levels. Typically, many people will elect for 3-4 treatments spread out over 3-4 weeks.
In addition to using hands-on technique in his massage therapy sessions, Dave incorporates laser acupuncture as well. As a result, these treatments are billed as massage therapy and qualify for workplace insurance coverage.
