About Athritis

Arthritis is a group of conditions involving damage to the joints of the body. The more common joints affected are knees, hands, hips, neck and lower back. According to statistics Canada, in 2009 15.2% of Canadians over 11 were diagnosed with arthritis. It is one of the leading causes of disability in people over the age of 55, greatly impacting the level of function and quality of life of multitudes of people.

The most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease in which the cartilage wears away in a joint, allowing bones to rub against each other causing pain and swelling. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a type of collagen disease which gradually results in decreased range of motion, pain and stiffness due to joints becoming swollen, painful and inflamed. RA tends to affect the entire body with inflammation occurring symmetrically in the body, and can begin as early as age 30. Other forms of arthritis include psoriatic arthritis, gout, polymyalgia rheumatica, and anklyosing spondylitis.

Arthritis is typically characterized by painful, swollen and stiff joints. The pain from arthritis mainly occurs due to inflammation in and around the joint. Contributing factors include age, being overweight, genetics, previous injuries, highly demanding physical jobs, daily wear and tear, and muscle strains caused by forceful movements against stiff joints.

While medicines, injections, and surgery all have their place in treating arthritis, many people are increasingly intolerant of the side effects associated with pharmaceutical drugs to treat this condition. Laser therapy often presents as a viable treatment option.

How Does Laser Therapy Affect Arthritis ?

By it’s very nature, arthritis is about inflammation. Low intensity laser (also known as cold laser therapy) is a powerful tool that can be used to reduce or even eliminate inflammation. Wavelengths of light interact with acupuncture points and affected joint tissue to stimulate the cells into a powerful healing response. Laser promotes protein synthesis, cell metabolism, and in some cases cartilage regeneration.

“Laser Therapy can be an effective technique in treating arthritis symptoms including inflammation of the joints and pain.” Dave Hanemaayer, RMT.

Benefits Of Using Laser Therapy For Arthritis

There are six main benefits of using laser therapy in a massage therapy session to treat arthritis with Dave Hanemaayer RMT, in Kitchener-Waterloo:

  • LASER IS PAINLESS – Although laser therapy is based on theories of medical acupuncture, no needles are used, only low intensity laser.
  • SAFE - Any contraindications to treatment, risks or potential side effects are discussed individually with each patient to facilitate informed consent.
  • REDUCES PAIN - Most patients report a significant reduction in arthritic pain after a massage utilizing laser therapy. In addition, massage treatments that utilize laser acupuncture can also improve moods, and reduce feelings of depression that can be associated with chronic arthritic pain.
  • REDUCED DEPENDENCY ON PAIN MEDICATION - Many pharmaceutical options for arthritis play host to undesirable side effects and can even damage your internal organs with prolonged use. Though laser therapy may reduce your dependency on such medications, consultation with a physician is ALWAYS recommended before making any changes in this regard.
  • SIMULTANEOUS MULTIPLE LASER DIODE TREATMENT - Dave uses multiple laser devices to maximize therapeutic results.
  • COMBINES WELL WITH HANDS-ON MASSAGE TECHNIQUES - Laser therapy usually makes hands-on deep tissue massage less uncomfortable. Also, laser therapy typically reduces inflammation quickly - this tends to lessen post massage soreness the day after deep tissue massage treatment. Lastly, many patients have reported they need less treatments overall in managing their arthritis pain syndromes when laser therapy is used in their massage sessions.

How Effective Is Laser Therapy For Reducing Arthritic Pain ?

Treatment can not be guaranteed as every individual responds a little differently. However, laser for arthritis is effective for most people. There are over 2500+ scientific studies proving the effectiveness of laser for multitudes of soft tissue pain and injury. Effectiveness rates of 90% are often reported.

Many patients do report a significant reduction in pain after massage treatment utilizing laser therapy. In cases of acute arthritis, this may occur at the end of the first or second treatment. In chronic arthritis cases, this may take 2-3+ treatments until notable results are experienced. Results are not guaranteed.

Can You Charge Laser Therapy As Massage Therapy ?

In addition to using hands-on technique in his massage therapy sessions, Dave incorporates the laser therapy technique called "laser acupuncture". As a result, these treatments are billed as massage therapy and qualify for workplace insurance coverage.
